Caged Canary

Sometimes I feel like a caged canary
watching you through my wooden cell
realizing I am secondary
because I know you all too well
You'd much prefer my silent partner
who sleeps purring at your feet
I watch you pet her long sleek fur
as I chirp forgotten in defeat
my song is lost inside your ear
replaced by sweet enticing mew
her soft touch and presence is always near
as I sing a bitter song to you
all my feathers fade in color
I cling to my perch with all my might
you take comfort in your other
and I sing songs into the night
